Horse Race Handicapping College - Extra Weight and Thoroughbred Horse Racing

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
32 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Extra Weight and Thoroughbred Horse Racing

Extra weight for a horse race handicapper can be a friend or an enemy.

That extra weight is the weight that is added to horses in a field to make the field consistent so that all horses have similar chances of winning the race. Although not the best way of making a field even in strength, this standard practice is widely used and horse race handicappers cannot ignore it.

When a very small weight is added, it is generally not considered to influence the horse's performance. However, if you are selecting a horse that is at the top of the weight list to win, then you will have to look at things from a different perspective. If that specific horse is significantly heavier than the next heaviest horse, a conservative horse race handicapper would probably consider another horse.

On the other hand, if the horse that you have selected to win is lighter than most of the other horses that are of similar strength, then you might take this as an advantage.

The best case scenario for picking a winning horse by its weight, is selecting a horse that is at the same weight or lighter than its rivals and is of similar strength plus if it is carrying lesser weight in this race when compared to its last start.

As long as your selection ran well in the last race and is running with a similar field in the current race, you can probably be assured of a good performance.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Horse Racing Regulators

Kentucky Derby Countdown:

Horse Racing Regulators Hope to End Past Posting, Improve Security

Calling racing regulators “protectors” of horse racing bettors, handicapper Mike Maloney urged horse racing commissioners to take action to stop past-posting incidents and improve wagering integrity.

A Keeneland Race Course-based professional horse player, Maloney spoke at the Association of Racing Commissioners International annual convention on Tuesday in Austin, Texas. Maloney, who has been betting on horses for 30 years, said he has seen too many instances where race wagers continue to be accepted well after the gates have opened.

RCI Integrity Services President Paul Bowlinger, himself an avid horseplayer, said Maloney’s story shows the need for fast action.

“We’re no longer talking in the abstract,” Bowlinger said. “What frustrates me is that we talked about this two years ago.”

Last year the RCI passed a model rule on wagering integrity that requires states to obtain independent software to monitor pools, but states have been slow to act. Software by RCI Integrity Services that would assure such a requirement is met currently has just one customer, Youbet.

In December at the Symposium on Racing and Gaming, Maloney documented his ability to wager on a Fair Grounds race at Keeneland well after the event had started. Maloney made the wagers to prove it could be done, after raising this issue with racetrack officials and industry insiders since 2002.

“They would look at me like I’d just reported a UFO,” Maloney said.

Maloney believes regulators are best suited to solve the problem.

“When we’re out there betting at any level, whether it be $2 or $2,000, you are our protectors,” Maloney said.

Bowlinger said racing could be losing significant handle because players are not confident in integrity of the pools. He said the issue must be addressed.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Curlin Shows True USA Colors at the the World Cup

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
34 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Curlin Shows True USA Colors at the the World Cup

United States Horse of the Year Curlin proved quite capable of defeating some of the best competition in the world as he cruised to a convincing 7 3/4-length romp in the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) on Saturday at Nad al Sheba racecourse.

The Smart Strike colt stalked the pace from the outside during a wide trip but when called upon approaching the quarter pole, Curlin accelerated right past Well Armed and Asiatic Boy. He dispatched the two challengers with just a few powerful strides and opened a commanding advantage under jockey Robby Albarado.

Once heavily favored Curlin seized the lead, the outcome was never in jeopardy as he built an insurmountable chasm between himself and his nearest challenger.

“It’s a great privilege for me to be on him. What a horse,” Albarado said. “I just show up and ride him and get the glory, but everybody works so hard but I am the one that’s seen. He does it all on race day.”

Curlin, who entered off a clear win in the Jaguar Trophy on February 28 at Nad al Sheba, completed 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs) in 2:00.15.

“It’s easy when you ride a great horse like Curlin,” Albarado said. “He’s not even tired.”

Rest of the Story

I was not disappointed, as well as plenty of other horse race handicappers. Curlin is a 'Stud' that has set very high horse racing standards.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Thoroughbred Horse Racing, Curlin, Big Brown, and 12

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
35 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Thoroughbred Horse Racing, Curlin, Big Brown, and 12.

The number 12 will be very important to two strong racing favorites Saturday: Curlin and Big Brown. It is the post position Curlin drew for the $6 million Dubai World Cup and Big Brown drew for the $1 million Florida Derby.

Curlin appears to have an easier task. English bookmaker William Hill has listed the 2007 Horse of the Year as the 2-5 favorite. In fact, he is so heavily favored that the race book is offering a separate win pool on the other dozen Dubai World Cup horses, minus Curlin.

The Dubai World Cup is a 11/4 miles. Because of the triangular shape of the Nad Al Sheba main track, there is more than a quarter-mile run to the first turn. That should give Curlin jockey Robby Albarado time to move closer to the rail to save some ground.

That will be important because of a very long, tiring stretch run. Albarado will need to conserve Curlin's energy for the latter part of the race.

Rest of Story

Horse race handicappers know that if this quality horse has a good trip, he is destined to win another for the USA on foreign sand.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Thoroughbred Horse Racing and the History of the Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
36 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Thoroughbred Horse Racing and the History of the Kentucky Derby

One of throughbred horse racings Triple Crown events, the Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday of May each year, ( 3 May 2008 ).

Horse racing in Kentucky has a deep history, dating back to 1789 when the first race course was built in Lexington. However, it was not until 1875, that Churchill Downs officially opened and began its tradition as "Home of the Kentucky Derby."

The Kentucky Derby is the most famous and prestigious horse races in the world. It is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown.

Churchill Downs was started by a group headed by a man named M. Lewis Clark in 1874. The group built the racetrack on land owned by the Churchill family of Louisville, Kentucky. The track officially opened on May 17, 1875 and that was the day of the first Kentucky Derby won by Aristides.

The races in the late 1800's were modeled after the English Derby and were 1.5 miles long. In 1896 they changed the length of the Kentucky Derby to 1.25 miles, which is the current length of the dirt track.

The first leg in the pursuit of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby is viewed by many as the most exciting 2 minutes in sports. The two spires atop the homestretch grandstands were added in 1895 and remain one of the most recognized structures in all of sports.

Be sure to order your Kentucky Derby tickets early.

Kentucky Derby tickets at Churchill Downs in premier seating-all backed by an unprecedented 200% money back guarantee.

Horse race handicappers are really looking forward to this years Kentucky Derby as there are many quality horses lining up to capture the 'big prize'.

Everyone has an opinion on which horse will win, but all bets are off when they head down the stretch at Churchill Downs on May 3.

Historically speaking, the early favorite usually disappoints and the overlooked horse has an incredible trip and has a very generous payoff.

The horse race handicappers who are able to sift thru all of the data and discard the hype, are the ones who cash the winning tickets, especially for the 'big' races.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Thoroughbred Horse Racing Contender Victorious

Kentucky Derby Countdown:

Thoroughbred Horse Racing Contender Victorious

Adriano surged to a commanding lead with little urging from jockey Edgar Prado entering the stretch of the $500,000 Lane’s End Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Turfway Park and coasted to a 2 1/2-length score.

Prado and the chestnut A.P. Indy colt drew clear in the final furlong as Adriano comfortably secured his first career stakes victory.

Trained by Graham Motion for owner-breeder Donald Adam’s Courtlandt Farms, Adriano entered off an unplaced finish on February 24 at Gulfstream Park in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), in which he was steadied entering the first turn of his first career start on dirt.

Adriano previously had shown plenty of promise on turf, winning a maiden special weight race on grass by three lengths at Saratoga Race Course in August and posting a dominant 6 3/4-length romp in 1 1/16-mile allowance race at Gulfstream Park on January 11 in his season debut. He finished fourth in the Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1) as a juvenile on the all-weather Polytrack surface at Keeneland Race Course, and delivered a dominant performance on Turfway’s Polytrack in the Lane’s End.

Adriano stalked pacesetter Duke of de Buqe from fourth through an opening quarter in :23.03 in the 1 1/8-mile race. Adriano accelerated ahead to challenge for the lead on the far turn when Prado let out a notch on the reins and powered clear to a two-length advantage at the eighth pole.

“I thought he was extremely impressive,” said...

Adriano is just one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders. Horse race handicappers will no doubt have their skills tested this year.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Steroids and Thoroughbred Horse Racing

Kentucky Derby Countdown:

Steroids and Thoroughbred Horse Racing

While slots have become the chief battleground in the fight between Maryland’s horse racing industry and its neighbors’, a pharmaceutical front has opened.

Pennsylvania and Delaware authorities have banned steroids in thoroughbreds, while Maryland officials are deferring a decision. Bets are still off, however, on whether those states’ precedent-setting bans will give them yet another advantage over Maryland horse racing.

Maryland’s racing industry has been losing ground and revenues to competing tracks in Delaware, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, partly because of the attraction of legalized slot machines in those states. Maryland voters in November will consider a referendum on legalizing slots at some tracks.

In the meantime, if Maryland is left as the only ‘‘steroid state” in the region, some observers fear owners and trainers won’t bring their best horses here. Yet others say the lure of being able to use steroids might attract more top horses.

The governing bodies of thoroughbred horse racing and harness racing in Maryland and Virginia and harness racing in Delaware are delaying....

Kentucky Derby Countdown:

Horse Race Handicapping College Perspective from the Master

[ 3 Part Horse Race Handicapping Perspective ]

Part III

Continued from Part II:

Also as an intelligent, logical thinking person, wouldn't it make sense that the horse race handicappers that ARE doing their homework and know EVERY trend of EVERY racetrack would have an advantage on the ones that don't?

And would it also not make sense that the professional horse race handicapper would have a decided advantage over the ones who do this for recreation purposes or only a couple of times a year?

Don't get me wrong: we absolutely need the "occasional" weekend warrior player and I will do my best to help anyone that asks for it, but the REALITY is that these types of players put tens of thousands of "dead" (unlikely to win) dollars in the wagering pools everyday whether it be .50 beer night at the track or the Kentucky Derby.

Do you think that the professional horse race handicapper like myself aren't feasting on these types of players?

This is the sheer definition of the small "fishes" swimming into the shark tank. But the good news is that these folks are doing this for entertainment, so if those of us who work in the business do our jobs and make it enjoyable for them, they will come back and hopefully often.

So the next time that someone tells you (or you read it online) that no one is beating this game, smile to yourself and say to yourself "I'm GLAD they think that way".

If you are so inclined, set out to learn my principles and make those folks WRONG!!!

Continued from Part I:

Of course many of us would counter the smaller "rake" theory with the fact that many more people percentage wise know how to play poker than horse racing so that sort of makes up for the 2/1 disparage in take-out doesn't it?

I have said it for 30 years and I will do so until the day I die: Just because many people can't beat horse racing (and never will) doesn't mean you and I can't.

The simple reason that the majority of the 98% that lose at this sport is simple: They don't PREPARE, and education is the first step in the preparation process.

I can assure you that it is hard work, as I do it everyday, but I am paid handsomely for my efforts and get paid for something that I absolutely LOVE to do. How many people can HONESTLY say that?

It just never ceases to amaze me how intelligent people that understand that the pari-mutuel system of wagering on horse racing is player vs. player could ever surmise logically that SOMEONE isn't beating the other players the majority of the time.

No one is going to hand you any money in this sport, you have to earn it. But when you do earn it, it is very satisfying and rewarding.

[ 3 Part Horse Race Handicapping Perspective ]

Part I

I have been reading the usual "stuff" on the horse racing message boards lately about how systems and "touts" don't work and that half of the 2% of all people who win longterm on horse racing (the 2% number being a figure that we DO agree on) do so because they make their money by selling their own products.

Although I totally agree that most if not all of the so called "systems" have many flaws and that many "touts" (folks who select horses for their customers) do so simply to supplement their income, there is a huge difference between them and those of us who attempt to educate people on how to handicap horse racing and wager properly.

In fact, my spot play results are posted in the members area of the Horse Race Handicapping College site for our members to look back many months and see that not only do we consistently offer strong price plays for our customers, but instead of just throwing them a "fish", we always welcome the opportunity to "teach them how to fish" as well, and to learn the concepts similar to "know when to hold'em and know when to fold'em" like poker.

I am committed to giving back to people what was so patiently given to me in the late 1970's and that is the tools needed for beating this "game" on a longterm, CONSISTENT basis.

How can anyone think that a game in which the outcome is determined by player against player not be a beatable one?

People acknowledge every day that there are professional poker players who win on a consistent basis by beating the other players, and even though the house rake in poker is smaller than horse racing, it is the EXACT same concept!

OZONE PARK, N.Y. -- For those who missed out on Aqueduct's million-dollar pick-six pool on March 5, a second opportunity awaits you on Wednesday. After the wager went un-hit on Friday and Saturday - and with no racing Sunday through Tuesday - there is a carryover of $236,310 entering Wednesday's card.

Two weeks ago, when there was a carryover of $265,874, an additional $1.05 million was wagered into the pool. With Gulfstream and Santa Anita both dark Wednesday, handicappers will likely gravitate to Aqueduct's pick six.

Two weeks ago, there were only 50 betting interests - 41 after scratches. Wednesday, there are 57 betting interests in the sequence with nary a single on the card. Rain was forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, meaning a wet track is likely.

Here's a look at the sequence:

Welcome to Frank's Energy Beach, the park's new, outdoor lounge, styled as a trendy hangout for 20- and 30-somethings who come from all over South Florida.

It was created by Gulfstream owner Frank Stronach and his vice president for strategic development, Aaron Perry, to bring in the young.....

Innovative - Yes. Industry First - Yes

Frank's Energy Beach is the first outdoor beach lounge to open at a race track in America, according to Eric Wing, spokesman for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

Frank's faces the ground-level horse race track and resembles Nikki Beach in South...

Horse racing has not grown over the years with innovative ideas and is stuck with the same mentality that it has had for over 50 years, and has lost ground in popularity to the other major sporting events.

Other than the Kentucky Derby, the Triple Crown, and the Breeders' Cup, there is very little enthusiasm for the Sport of Kings.

The greedy Track Owners have lined their pockets over the years and have tarnished a very exciting and lucrative sport.

Unless innovative ideas are brought to the table, horse racing and horse race handicapping will continue to be stuck in the mud and the 'fat cats' will continue to line their pockets with your money.

I personally have devised a plan that could bring back the excitement to thoroughbred horse racing and horse race handicapping.

Anticipation would once again fill the air in advance of a major race. It would create a national and international following much like the Super Bowl.

Horse races on Par with the classic Sea Biscuit and War Admiral.

So what if Pyro, a precocious 2-year-old last summer and fall, ran three times against War Pass and was beaten each time. Now he is 3 and perhaps when the rivals meet on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, the result will be different.

The reason for this optimism is the race Pyro ran last week, roaring to a 3-length victory in the Grade II, $600,000 Louisiana Derby.

It wasn't easy, but Pyro had the right stuff, just like he did in winning the ...

Horse Race Handicapping College - Horse Racing in Maryland Comes Down to the Wire

Kentucky Derby Countdown:

Horse Racing in Maryland Comes Down to the Wire

If voters nix November’s slots referendum, Maryland’s horse racing industry might be doomed — and that could drag down the state’s $5.2 billion equine industry, some experts say.

Robert Burk, executive director of the horse industry board in the state’s Department of agriculture, fears that if Maryland’s strong infrastructure support for horse racing declines — including the breeding industry — there will be ripple effect into the state’s recreational or pleasure horse activities.

Maryland is the nation’s most ‘‘horse-dense” state, with eight per acre. Only 40 percent of its 90,000 to 100,000 horses are in the racing industry.

Maryland’s entire horse industry assets are worth $5.2 billion, with an annual economic impact of.....

Another 'flashback' video of a classic horse race. The year 2005. The Kentucky Derby. The Horse Giacomo.

Here is an example of the lead pack of horses appearing to dominate and then here comes Giacomo from the middle of the pack, getting an excellent trip, and a strong surge down the stretch to win the 2005 Kentucky Derby.

Key in on the horses as they fan out of the final turn and Giacomo threading the needle to find the best line to the finish line. Giacomo was the strong horse that day and used positioning on the track to his advantage.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Thoroughbred Horse Racing - and Down the Stretch They Come

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
60 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Thoroughbred Horse Racing - and Down the Stretch They Come

This is when the horse race really gets interesting.

It is at this stage of the race that most horse players are focused on the leaders, especially if your horse is there.

The Professional horse race handicapper; however, is viewing the race from a different perspective. They are watching the horses in the middle of the field and those that are bringing up the rear.

While there may not be a lot to be learned by watching which horse won, which horse placed, and which horse showed, keeping an eye on the also-rans may provide the horse handicapper with valuable clues for future wagers.

How the trip horse race handicapper interprets this information compiled in their notes, is a key to picking winners in future races that players are considering, i.e. the 'long-shot'

For the most part, legitimate excuses for a poor performance would suggest that a horse will improve, provided, of course that his form has remained constant.

On the other hand, a trouble-free trip might explain the unexpectedly easy victory of unanticipated horses, or unrealistically high ratings, especially if the other contenders in the field experienced troubled trips.

With practice and experience, a horse race handicapper, is able to evaluate a horse's trip with ease and accuracy. He is also able to apply this to future races, as he has kept scrupulous notes to make this a simple process.

Horse racing handicapping and wagering, although a legal form of gambling, does not guarantee that the risk of losing your money has been eliminated; even in a Stakes Race.

Always wager with money that you can afford to lose, do not violate your money management rules, and do not be greedy, there will always be another horse race to wager on.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Thoroughbred Horse Racing - On the Far Turn

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
61 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Thoroughbred Horse Racing - On the Far Turn

The horse race handicapper knows that before the horses head for home, they must encounter the far turn ... a very decisive moment of the race.

The far turn is the stage of the race where most horses make their decisive winning or reluctant losing moves.

A horse race handicapper who is focused and 'in the game', knows that the final turn is very important in deciding who makes it to the Winner's Circle. They will observe which horse saves and which horse loses ground in 2 critical places in the turn.

Pay particular attention to when the horses reach the midpoint of the turn, and as they fan out at the end of the turn transitioning to the stretch run. Key in on the horses that make the bold, decisive, and winning moves. If they do it in one race, with good results, they will probably do it again in future races.

Fact: Only 2% of all horse race handicappers actually make money wagering.

Horse Race Handicapping College - Thoroughbred Horse Racing - On the Back Stretch

Kentucky Derby Countdown:
62 Days Until May 3rd and the 134th Kentucky Derby

Thoroughbred Horse Racing - On the Back Stretch

As the horse race develops and the horses enter the back stretch, sometimes a horse will begin to make a move on the back stretch, only to be blocked behind a wall of horses in front.

The horse and or the jockey are unable to find any running room, and the horse subsequently will lose several lengths and will drop out of contention.

Now the successful horse race handicapper who is paying attention will note such trouble and will decide whether or not the horse would have run well if there had been more room to do so.

In the case of a horse that begins to accelerate strongly on the back stretch and begins to make a passing attempt, only to get shut off, a horse race handicapper might assume in future races, that the horse is a contender if he has the running room.

Horse race handicapping is not an exact science, as seen by this example, but the horse race handicapper who takes notes and analyzes the races and knows the horses by name and or running style will have a distinct advantage. Much the same as a Football coach or player watching hours and hours of game film of the opponent.
